icon for Raven Hey everyone. As the title suggests: I've been wondering.
How well do you all get on with your parents for being furries, and what age do you reckon is old enough to choose for yourself who you are and what you do?
Hmmm... Can't wait to see what you think...

then again... it's probably just me.

Hi There ^.^

Telling them your a furry is easy, cos the chance of them knowing what a furry is, is next to nill.
My mum is of the church going type and I had no intentions of telling her anytime soon. but after spending the Xmas Holidays with her, she found my Fox tail and ears snooping in my room and she quized me, so i caved in but only told her a watered down version of it.
I showed her some clean furry art and said that it was a group of people, mainly online that love anthropomorphic animals, fantasy, cartoons, art, gaming, music, storys, roleplay and that some even dress up in Fursuits to roleplay in.
I never told her that its full of Gay's and Bi's in furry that love to get together and get drunk now and then, or that i too would love one of those sexy cool fursuits.
as this im sure would mean a crack over the head with a cross from her, screeming "convert now demon" :P
Furries, are little known here in NZ so it makes telling older people easy'er.
Its nowhere near the same level as saying you Gay, Bi or whatever, as they know what THAT is.
You dont need to tell them anyway. and any age that your comfortable with who you are is a good time if you do decide to say.

Have a great day, my friend ^.^

well hey there,good question.

my mother has one of those unbeleavably annoying talents of finding out everything,so she found out bout me being a burry quite quick,we still get on quite well and she still consideres me her son so yeah quite well id say,now about the age,i started wen i was oof bout 10 i think it was and now im almost 18 so yeah, the age is sometimes a big deal but you can start wen u feel the time right in my opinion,so yeah.....

icon for TrojanCentaur Heh, I know the feeling buddy. When talking with my mum today, she pretty much loathed anyone who likes Doctor Who, and said that if you enjoyed it at all, "you're definatly a nerd". Nerd used in a very negitive sence, naturally. Hell, if I can't watch a Doctor Who episode without being frowned upon, I can't possibly describe being a furry without being seriously alienated. Ah, and to think, I might have opened up in time. That put the nail in the coffin on that idea!

Previously that would have torn me to bits, being able to trust everyone you know EXCEPT my own parents. But now, my opinion is simply this: they don't need to know. Best case scenario anyway is that it doesn't change anything. Why risk all that unpleasantness for nothing? Obviously your case will be different, but just thought I might share that anyway. :)

As for the whole age thing, I believe people should choose their own direction in life from day one, but parents should HELP you choose that path in case of doubt until you leave home, and should help you reach the path you have chosen. I do not believe, however, that parents should choose that path for you, or otherwise try and manipulate you into it.

WhitelockRe: I've been wondering....28-Apr-2008 20:27
icon for Whitelock Heh well my mum found out I was a furry, because I wanted to go to a little local fur meet ages ago... So I kind of vaguely explained what a furry was.

Later on, she asked if Whinnie the Pooh was furry. I said, yeah I guess so... didn't think any more of it.

Next Christmas, I got Whinnie the Pooh stationary :P
BesonikRe: I've been wondering....30-Apr-2008 19:07
Mine don't care... but I haven't done anything but draw. Only recently found out there were other furries in New Zealand.

Seems to make the whole sexuality stuff easier though. I have pretty open minded parents.
